…ontainers Abort failover when the chosen target does not answer its SSH port, refuse automatic failovers within FAILOVER_MIN_INTERVAL_MS (default 10m), allow disabling the monitor with FAILOVER_DISABLED, and remove the previous deployment's containers from the old server behind a 30s cap so a dead host cannot hang the failover.
Remote builds cloned the repo and ran `railpack build .` without ever consulting the project's sourceDir or projectType, so any project whose code lives in a subfolder failed with "Railpack could not determine how to build the app" while the same project deployed fine locally. Send the local railpack-config-utils.ts source to the target host, write it into the clone through a quoted heredoc, and run it there with bun, which is installed unzip-free via python3 when the host has neither bun nor unzip. Remote failures now read stdout before stderr, so failureReason no longer reports git's "Cloning into '.'..." instead of the real error.
…eployment's server ingressSite (the route writer for cross-server projects behind the local ingress) never emitted CADDY_ACCESS_LOG_BLOCK, so project requests were never access-logged and request-logs/metrics stayed empty. Runtime logs ran 'docker logs' against the local node for every deployment (the SSE stream used a raw spawn, bypassing ssh targeting), returning [] for anything on a remote server; both handlers now resolve the deployment's server behind orchestrator/runtime-logs.ts.
…database hosts Close out the open rows from artifacts/verify-dequel/BUGS.md (005-018, 027, 028, 030-033, 039, 040), live-verified on the primary host. BUG-027: cancelling a deployment now kills the build's whole process group (detached local spawns with pgid tracking, DEQUEL_PGID echoed by the remote script and parsed on abort), and the cancel handler reports the abort instead of a generic failure. BUG-039: pam-auth mounts host /etc as a directory and copies passwd/shadow/group into the container in place every 2s, so useradd/chpasswd/usermod become visible to PAM immediately — file binds froze the mount-time inode so logins kept failing until a restart. BUG-040: Caddy now provisions real Let's Encrypt certificates for db-* hostnames (site route files database-<host>.caddy written on create, patch, and delete trigger auto-HTTPS), and the gateway serves those certs from the shared caddy-data volume (mtime-cached, SAN and expiry checked, self-signed fallback kept). Live-verified: openssl -verify_return_error returns 0 for all three public databases and the node pg driver's verify-full semantics now connect out of the box. BUG-016: the credentials endpoint probes external reachability and returns a warning the dashboard surfaces when the endpoint is down. Also extract authMiddleware into its own module, add lazy repo imports and orchestrator mocks so bun test runs green again (440 pass, 1 pre-existing DiagRunMachine failure), and correct the database TLS docs note to describe the new certificate path.
hosts for connections Wire Caddy certificate detection into connection strings and resolve direct database endpoints from their assigned server. Also begins refactoring Railpack process cancellation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winValidation errors do not reset

20-28: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winA valid session cookie blocks the API-key path, and an invalid cookie causes a failure even when the Bearer key is valid.
The middleware checks the cookie branch first. If
dequel_sessionis present but expired or invalid, the middleware returns 401 and never evaluates theAuthorizationheader. A client can send both a stale browser cookie and a valid API key, for example a CLI that shares a cookie jar. That client then gets "Invalid session" and no Bearer fallback. The fix: when cookie verification fails, continue to the Bearer check. Return 401 only if neither credential is valid.Proposed fix

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
The credentials endpoint probes the gateway from inside the network, so reachability results can be wrong.
The API container calls probeTcp(gatewayHost, 443). That checks whether the API host can reach port 443. It does not check whether external clients can reach it. Every credentials request also waits for DNS resolution plus a TCP connect timeout of up to 2 s. If the API container cannot reach its own public hostname (hairpin NAT is unavailable), the endpoint returns externalConnectionString: null while the gateway works for external clients. The user then has no connection string to use. Return the connection string in all cases. Use the probe result only to set warning and externalReachable.

Store and stop the Docker log follower. stop() terminates childProcess, but this spawn never assigns childProcess. After a client closes the runtime-log stream, docker logs --follow can continue running and retaining pipes. Assign the spawned child to childProcess. If the request closed while runtimeLogFollowerArgs was pending, stop the child immediately after spawning it.

Validate and write replica bounds atomically.
Two concurrent partial PUTs can read the same bounds and each pass this check. For an existing range of 1–5, a request setting minReplicas: 5 and another setting maxReplicas: 2 can then persist 5–2. The repository performs separate reads and updates without an atomic range check. Serialize the updates or check the effective range in the write transaction. (github.com)

Keep each volume name with its server ID.
The new database target records identify the owning server, but databaseVolumeNames remains a separate list. The deletion route therefore runs volume rm against the local Docker daemon. Use exact name matching in find_container and find_running_container.
grep -m1 "$1" treats the name as a regex and matches any part of a container name. The lookup for buildkit therefore also matches names like my-buildkit-cache or buildkit_old. The lookup for dequel-caddy also matches dequel-caddy-old.
Failure path when the running check matches the wrong container:
- Assume another container whose name contains
buildkitis running. ensure_containerlogs "already running" for that container.remove_stoppedat Line 139 then deletes the real stoppedbuildkitcontainer, becauseremove_stoppeduses exact matching.- Preparation still reports success, but the server no longer has a container named
buildkit.
Failure path when the existing-container check matches the wrong container:
- At Line 145,
docker start "$existing"can start an unrelated stopped container instead of creating the Dequel container.
remove_stopped already uses grep -qxF. Use the same exact, fixed-string matching in both lookups. Reuse of a different container is already handled on purpose by equivalent_running.
These lookups also run docker without $SUDO, while docker start and docker run use it. If the user can run Docker only through sudo, the lookups find nothing. A later name conflict then hits the fatal exit 1 path at Line 169. Consider adding $SUDO to the read-only docker ps and docker inspect calls as well.

Handle stdin errors when abort closes SSH. If cancellation kills SSH while a large script is still being written, child.stdin can emit EPIPE or a write-after-end error. The child’s error listener does not handle errors emitted by its stdin stream. Attach a stdin error listener so one cancelled operation cannot crash the API process. Based on learnings: a spawned child’s stdin requires its own error listener when an early exit can interrupt a write.

| - MySQL is the exception: its wire protocol begins with a server greeting before the client sends anything, so there is no hostname for the gateway to route on. Exposed MySQL databases keep the direct port path (`<server-ip>:<random-port>`); open that port in your firewall, or use the dashboard SQL console. | ||
| - The gateway terminates TLS with a platform certificate. MongoDB strings skip verification (`tlsAllowInvalidCertificates`). For PostgreSQL, `sslmode=require` skips verification in libpq/psql, but the Node `pg` driver treats it as full verification — there, either append `&uselibpqcompat=true` (Node only; psql rejects that flag) or set `ssl: { rejectUnauthorized: false }` in client code. Redis clients verify certificates by default, so set `rejectUnauthorized: false` in your client configuration. | ||
| - The gateway terminates TLS with a Let's Encrypt certificate for the database hostname — Caddy issues it within seconds of enabling Public Access and renews it automatically — so the strings above verify out of the box. In the gaps (right after enabling Public Access, or on a `localhost` setup with no base domain) the gateway falls back to a self-signed certificate: MongoDB strings carry `tlsAllowInvalidCertificates=true` (verification off) until a real certificate exists; for PostgreSQL append `&uselibpqcompat=true` (Node only; psql rejects that flag) or set `ssl: { rejectUnauthorized: false }` in client code; Redis clients verify certificates by default, so set `rejectUnauthorized: false` in your client configuration while the fallback is in effect. |

Do not recommend disabling certificate verification for fallback connections.
These instructions disable enforcement of server-certificate validation: MongoDB documents tlsAllowInvalidCertificates=true as disabling validation, and node-postgres maps sslmode=require with uselibpqcompat=true to rejectUnauthorized: false. The Redis instruction also sets that option. A network attacker could then impersonate the database endpoint and capture credentials or traffic. MongoDB warns that this setting can expose clients to processes posing as valid servers. (mongodb.com)
Tell users to wait for a CA-valid certificate or document how to trust the fallback certificate securely. Warn users not to send production credentials or data while verification is disabled.

Partial failure leaves an orphaned project when the ZIP deployment fails.
createDeployment runs after createProject succeeds. The API rejects empty archives and unsupported extensions with status 400. In that case the catch block sets the error state, but the project stays created. The env-var failure path at lines 194-203 deletes the project on failure. This path does not.
The user then sees "Retry Deployment". A retry calls createProject again with the same name. This can create a duplicate project or fail on a name conflict.
Delete the created project when createDeployment fails. Alternatively, validate the archive extension and size on the client before creating the project.

Reject hook creation when no webhook secret is configured.
If the integration has no webhookSecret, the code sends an empty secret to GitHub. GitHub then signs no payloads. The /webhook handler already rejects every delivery when no secret exists. The hook is created but never works.
Return a 400 error with a clear message before creating the hook.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Do not continue startup after an encryption migration failure.
The .catch logs the error and lets the API start. If the migration fails partway, some rows stay under the old key. Later decryption with config.envEncryptionKey then fails or returns wrong data. Let the error propagate so the process stops, or retry the migration and verify its result.

Validate DATABASE_URL before use.
withEnv("DATABASE_URL", "") returns an empty string when the variable is unset. The database client then fails with an unclear connection or parsing error at runtime. Throw a clear error at configuration load, or at first use in getDb.
Based on learnings: validate absent environment-derived values before passing them to client-construction code.

Validate the `DATABASE_URL` configuration before it reaches database-client
construction, rather than allowing the empty fallback from `withEnv` to fail
later with an unclear error. Raise a clear error during configuration loading or

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Do not fall back to a hardcoded default encryption key.
If ENV_ENCRYPTION_KEY is unset, config.envEncryptionKey becomes the public constant "dev-env-key-change-me". The code then encrypts SMTP passwords and other secrets with a key that anyone can read in the repository. These secrets are effectively stored in plaintext.
Fail at startup in production when the variable is missing. Alternatively, generate and persist a random key, as the CLI does. Use the default only in an explicit development mode.
Based on learnings: "Never persist those secrets in plaintext" when no real encryptor is available.

Set ownership for directories created with sudo.
When a non-root developer runs the API, config.workspaceRoot and config.caddyRoutesDir resolve to /app/workspace and /caddy/routes. The API creates deployment directories and Caddy route files under these paths. If sudo mkdir creates the parent directories with non-writable permissions for the developer, those operations can fail.

Require a deployment-specific encryption key.
When ENV_ENCRYPTION_KEY is unset, both Compose services receive the public value dev-env-key-change-me. The API uses this key to encrypt persisted environment variables and other secrets. Anyone who obtains the encrypted values and their stored IVs and authentication tags can derive the same key and decrypt them.

Restrict an existing .env before writing the encryption key.
If .env exists without ENV_ENCRYPTION_KEY and has permissive permissions, this branch appends the secret without changing those permissions. Apply mode 600 before writing to an existing file, as the new-file branch already does.
