Fixes #575

Opt-in Corefile nullmail (default off). When set, the kuadrant plugin applies deny-all mail policy after DNSRecords are merged.

It always serves:

  • apex TXT v=spf1 -all
  • *._domainkey TXT v=DKIM1; p=
  • _dmarc TXT v=DMARC1; p=reject; sp=reject; adkim=s; aspf=s
  • apex MX 0 . (RFC 7505 null MX, so an apex A/AAAA is not an implicit exchanger)

Enforcement is zone-wide. A DNSRecord cannot override it with an exact or multi-label DKIM selector, a subdomain _dmarc or SPF TXT, or a CNAME/NS/DNAME at those policy names. Those are replaced or dropped, and a warning is logged. Any other MX in the zone is replaced with a null MX. Non-SPF TXT (site verification) is kept.

Default-on was not used so existing mail zones are not broken on upgrade. To send mail, omit the flag.

Ordinary CNAMEs are left in place. A CNAME-only name can still follow to a target that publishes its own SPF. Delegated names (NS at a non-policy owner) are also outside this guarantee.

Tested with plugin unit tests, including selector, subdomain DMARC/SPF, DKIM CNAME, null MX, and per-stanza flag isolation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added an opt-in nullmail setting that publishes deny-all SPF, DKIM and DMARC policies, plus a null MX, across a DNS zone.
    • Conflicting mail-policy records are replaced or dropped, while non-SPF TXT records are preserved. The setting is off by default.
    • Added sample Corefile configuration and DNS records.
  • Documentation

    • Documented the nullmail setting, its default behaviour and its effect on existing mail-policy records.

📝 Walkthrough

The CoreDNS plugin adds an opt-in nullmail directive. When enabled, it enforces SPF, DMARC, DKIM, and null MX records across the zone. Zone refreshes reapply the protection. Examples, documentation, and tests cover the option and its record behaviour.

Changes: Mail protection

The plugin parses the bare nullmail directive and passes its value to new zones. The examples and documentation describe the option and its mail-policy records.
Enforce protection and retain it on refresh
coredns/plugin/mailprotect.go, coredns/plugin/k8s.go, coredns/plugin/mailprotect_test.go, coredns/plugin/Dockerfile
When enabled, the plugin enforces SPF, DMARC, DKIM, and null MX records at relevant zone names. It retains non-SPF TXT records and reapplies protection after zone refreshes. The Docker build copies the new enforcement source. Tests cover parsing, record responses, and refresh behaviour.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to dcddc

The opt-in protection is reapplied after DNSRecord changes, and those records cannot override protected policy names. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f2e73

The opt-in default and per-zone setting limit upgrade impact. However, retained DNS aliases can supply permissive mail-authentication policy for protected subdomains, weakening the advertised zone-wide protection. Exploitation requires permission to publish accepted DNS records and control of the alias target.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The advertised zone-wide deny-all policy does not cover CNAME-only SPF/MX owners. A permitted DNSRecord writer can publish send.example.com as a CNAME to a controlled target with permissive SPF. The transform leaves that alias untouched, and TXT lookup follows it. Mail using send.example.com for both envelope and visible sender identities can obtain aligned SPF despite inherited rejecting DMARC. Direct-record replacement and DMARC/DKIM alias removal do not close this authority transition. The alias capability existed previously; the PR introduces an enforcement guarantee that does not contain it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced attack scope is mail identities under enabled zones for which an actor can publish accepted DNSRecords. Informer selection uses the zone-name label and configured watched namespaces, defaulting to all namespaces. Deployment RBAC determines which actors actually possess that authority; it was not verified. A separately disabled stanza does not inherit nullmail.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A CNAME-only send.example.com owner has neither local SPF TXT nor MX, so it is omitted from both discovery sets. TXT lookup follows its target, which can provide permissive SPF. Matching envelope and visible sender domains at send.example.com satisfy strict SPF alignment; rejecting inherited DMARC does not reject an aligned authentication pass. This is a source-supported conditional attack path, not an end-to-end verified mail delivery result.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Corefile configuration selects the zone policy, while accepted DNSRecord endpoints provide mutable record content. The transformation overrides direct conflicting policies before publication and closes alias-based authority transfer at discovered DMARC/DKIM owners. SPF/MX helpers do not apply that same control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing test cases cover disabled defaults, direct SPF/MX replacement, exact DKIM selectors, DKIM CNAME removal, refresh enforcement, retained unrelated records, and stanza isolation. These provide counterevidence against blanket enforcement failure, but the cited cases do not exercise CNAME-only SPF/MX owners.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define whether alias and delegation targets fall inside nullmail's guarantee. Then enforce that boundary consistently during effective SPF/MX resolution or reject conflicting authority transfers, with explicit compatibility rules for unrelated aliases. Include a CNAME-only subdomain case that checks both returned policy and strict-alignment implications.

A rabbit reads the Corefile bright,
And sets the zone to guard the night.
SPF says no, DMARC says reject,
Empty DKIM seals the check.
A null MX keeps mail away,
While TXT and records hold their way.

- Line 35: Update the nullmail TXT enforcement around enforceTXT to remove
existing explicit selector._domainkey TXT records for the origin before
publishing the wildcard DKIM record, so exact selector records cannot override
it.
- Line 34: Update applyMailProtection so DMARC enforcement covers every in-zone
owner name beginning with _dmarc, not only _dmarc.<origin>. Overwrite TXT values
on matching DNSRecord entries with the enforced reject policy while leaving
unrelated records unchanged.

In `@coredns/plugin/setup.go`:
- Line 84: In the parse flow, scope nullmail state to each kuadrant stanza:
initialize a local flag for each iteration, set it when that stanza includes
nullmail, and assign it to nz.nullmail instead of reusing the persistent
k.NullMail value.

Hi @azgabur, could you take a look at this when you have a moment? It implements the opt-in nullmail behaviour we discussed under #575. The DKIM/DMARC/SPF bypasses are addressed in f2e7338. CI is waiting on maintainer approval to run. Happy to change anything else.

Hey @sage-s11 , currently our team has a lot of work with 1.6.0 release but we will get back to you. I did approve the CI in the meantime.

RFC 7208 makes v=spf1 case-insensitive. Detect V=SPF1 as SPF so
nullmail replaces it instead of leaving a second record and causing
an SPF permerror.

Hey @azgabur, rebased onto current main and pushed a small fix for the E2E image build.

The job was failing with undefined: applyMailProtection because mailprotect.go wasn’t in the explicit COPY list in the plugin Dockerfile. Added that line — local Docker build succeeds now.

CI needs approval again after the force-push. No rush, just letting you know.
