collect_range sent every gitlink line of git diff --raw to expand_gitlink,
including one whose destination is no longer a gitlink: a submodule removed,
or replaced by files tracked at the same path, as when a repository is merged
into its superproject with its history. expand_gitlink then demanded a
checkout of a submodule that no longer exists and the push was refused, exit
2, naming it -- with no way to satisfy the remedy it printed.

Only a pointer that is still a gitlink at the end of the range has a tree to
read. One deleted in the range is skipped; what stands at the path now is in
the name-only diff as files. That diff also takes T now, so a gitlink or
symlink that became a regular file is scanned as one.

Two cases, both failing before this change: a submodule folded into the
superproject has its replacing lockfile scanned, and a submodule removed
outright needs no checkout.

Found by

A superproject merging one of its submodule repositories in with its history: the merge deletes the docs gitlink and tracks the same files at docs/, and uphold supply-chain at pre-push refused with "the submodule docs moved in this range and is not checked out". Present on main at v1.38.0.

Verified

  • cargo test --test supply_chain_cli submodule: 5 passed; the two new cases fail on main.
  • Commit and pre-push hooks green.

Walkthrough

collect_range now includes type-changed paths and expands raw-diff entries only when the destination mode is a gitlink. New CLI tests cover submodule replacement with tracked files and outright submodule removal.

Walkthrough

The supply-chain pre-push scope builder, collect_range in src/supply.rs, used to send every gitlink line of git diff --raw to expand_gitlink. That included a gitlink deleted in the pushed range. A deleted gitlink has no checkout, so the push was refused with a remedy nobody could carry out.

The change makes three edits:

  • It expands a raw-diff entry only when the path is still a gitlink at the end of the range (destination mode 160000). It no longer matches on either mode.
  • It adds T (type change) to the name-only diff filter. A path that turned from a gitlink or symlink into a regular file is now scanned as a file.
  • It adds two CLI tests: a submodule folded into the superproject has its replacing lockfile scanned, and a submodule removed outright needs no checkout.

I checked the change against the review document's principles. It explicitly handles a state the old code got wrong, keeps the existing refusal for a submodule that still exists and is not checked out, and covers both new paths with tests. A file replaced by a gitlink still goes to expand_gitlink, as it did before. None of the records gets a concrete reason to be violated, so I'm reporting no violations.

Changes

File Change
src/supply.rs collect_range now expands a raw-diff entry only when its destination mode is still a gitlink (160000), so a submodule deleted or replaced by files in the range is skipped instead of demanding a checkout. The name-only diff filter gains T, so a path whose type changed into a regular file is collected.
tests/supply_chain_cli.rs Adds two tests: a submodule replaced by tracked files at the same path has its lockfile scanned with no checkout demanded, and a submodule removed outright passes with no checkout demanded.

Add a range-scan test for a symlink that becomes a regular uv.lock.

The ACMRT filter at src/supply.rs:730 selects T changes, so a path that changes from symlink to regular file is listed for scanning. No test in tests/supply_chain_cli.rs produces a T status. Removing T would leave the suite passing while such a uv.lock is no longer scanned.

Add a range test that commits a symlink named uv.lock, then replaces it in place with a regular file in the pushed range. Assert that the regular uv.lock is scanned for that range. Do not use git rm --cached for the replacement. That sequence produces D and A statuses, not T, which is the pattern the existing submodule tests use.

1420-1420: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert that the replacement test's scan receives sub/uv.lock.

The replacement test checks only the printed count, 1 lockfile(s) in this range. The count and the -L scan arguments come from the same locks list, so current behavior is correct. A regression that prints the count but does not pass the lockfile to osv-scanner can still pass this test. The earlier submodule test in this file checks the stub journal for each scanned path. Add the same check here.

🧪 Suggested test assertion
     assert!(said.contains("1 lockfile(s) in this range"), "{said}");
+    let ran = journal(&root);
+    assert!(ran.contains("sub/uv.lock]"), "{ran}");

Review comment at @tests/supply_chain_cli.rs at line 1420:
Update the replacement test containing the lockfile-count assertion to also
verify that the scanner journal records `sub/uv.lock`, so the test checks that
the lockfile is actually scanned.

1437-1439: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert that the removal test runs no scanner.

The removal test checks only the exit code and the absence of "not checked out". If the selection included sub/uv.lock, the zero-exit osv-scanner stub would still return success, and the test would still pass. Assert that the stub journal records no osv-scanner run.

Suggested fix
     let said = text(&output);
     assert!(!said.contains("not checked out"), "{said}");
+    let log = journal(&root);
+    assert!(!log.contains("osv-scanner"), "{log}");
