# Piloting

{{#template ../templates/unimplemented.md}}

Piloting is a mechanic that applies global modifiers to the round over the course of a round.
About 3-4 times a round, the station will go through an **exterior weather event**.
Exterior weather events apply global modifiers to the entire station or to space itself, unlike [station events](station-events.md) which typically focus on specific locations _inside_ the ship.

Some examples of weather events include:
- **Spacetime Dilation:** Increases the rate of the radiation storm
- **Gas Cloud:** Space is no longer a vacuum, instead being filled with a random gas
- **Space Dust:** Pelts the station from all sides with small pieces of space dust
- **Solar Vortex:** Space becomes unbearably hot, cooking anyone who steps outside
- **Ion Storm:** Disrupts electronics and causes machines to spark randomly
- **Aurora Caelus:** Pretty space lights
- **Dark Matter Influx:** Disables gravity across the station
- **Radio Interference Zone:** Slightly garbles radio messages, delays their sending, and broadcasts random player messages

## Make It So

The **Navigation Terminal** allows for a limited choice of which weather event the station goes through.
When used, it displays two different weather events (voted on by stagehands) and allows one to be selected.
However, due to the importance of the ship's course, the console is biometrically locked to the _Captain_, blocking everyone else from seeing or setting the course.

Giving the Captain the opportunity to set the course introduces a _Secret Hitler_-esque choice.
Although they can pick the route of the station, there's no guarantee that will be a "good" option.
This creates a potential point of intrigue: is the Captain intentionally picking options which harm the crew, or are they simply getting bad luck?

The sole ability to set the course of the ship also reinforces the Captain's authority.
Since they are the only one that is able to divert the ship from potentially dangerous weather, they become a figurehead able to steer the crew in and out of danger.
