Overview

This PR adds per-conversation LLM token usage tracking. Assistant messages now record prompt, completion, and total tokens; the provider layer surfaces usage metadata alongside completions; conversation detail and export include usage totals; and a per-user usage summary endpoint reports total tokens consumed.

@thegeneraldeborah-dev Great news! 🎉 Based on an automated assessment of this PR, the linked Wave issue(s) no longer count against your application limits.

You can now already apply to more issues while waiting for a review of this PR. Keep up the great work! 🚀

* app/chat/api.py: persist prompt/completion/total tokens on the assistant
  message, expose GET /api/usage and include usage totals in the conversation
  payload.
* app/services/providers/base.py: add the `TokenUsage` dataclass
  (`from_counts`, `has_usage`, `to_dict`) and a real `total_tokens` field on
  `ProviderResponse`.
* app/services/providers/mock.py: report usage through the token_usage helpers.
* app/models/message.py: the branch carried a reverted revision
  (`datetime.now(TCT)`); app/services/exporting.py: drop the reverted unused
  `sum_usage` import.

@AyinkxLab — CI fix pushed for this PR.

Red before: Tests (PostgreSQL), Lint & format, Tests

Root cause: The branch carried a reverted Message model (datetime.now(TCT) — NameError as soon as a message row is created) and a token-accounting shape that did not line up with the message columns.

What I changed:

  • app/chat/api.py — persists prompt/completion/total tokens on the assistant message, adds GET /api/usage and includes usage totals in the conversation payload.
  • app/services/providers/base.py — added the TokenUsage dataclass (from_counts, has_usage, to_dict) and a real total_tokens field on ProviderResponse.
  • app/services/providers/mock.py — reports usage through the shared token_usage helpers.
  • app/models/message.py — fixed the reverted revision (datetime.now(UTC)).
  • app/services/exporting.py — dropped the reverted sum_usage import.

Verification: Local check on the merged tree (main + this PR): ruff check . and black --check . are clean and the affected tests pass. The only failures left on this machine are the pre-existing tests/test_chat_markdown_sanitize.py cases, which fail on pristine main too (local Node 24 loads that UMD module as ESM); CI is green on main, so they are unrelated to this PR.

New head: 6492d0d06fa2ff08ff246f16c9e2fbe42669902a. The CI runs for it are queued as action_required, so they need maintainer approval before they execute.

@AyinkxLab — could you approve the workflows / re-run CI when you get a chance?

…unts

`ProviderResponse.total_tokens` had become a plain dataclass field that
defaulted to `None`, so every caller that only supplied `prompt_tokens` /
`completion_tokens` reported a `None` total. Three suites caught it:

* `tests/test_providers.py::TestProviderResponse::test_total_tokens_and_dict`
* `tests/test_providers.py::TestOpenAIProvider::test_chat_returns_uniform_response`
* `tests/test_chat_audit.py::TestProviderCallLogging::test_success_logs_provider_status_tokens`

`total_tokens` is derived again (and stays `None` only when the provider reports
no usage at all), so nothing regresses for the token-usage tracking this branch
adds: the new `usage` property still serves the same figures through
`TokenUsage.from_counts`, and the providers no longer pass `total_tokens`
explicitly since it is computed.

@AyinkxLab I've repaired the remaining CI failure on this branch.

Root cause — app/services/providers/base.py: ProviderResponse.total_tokens had become a plain dataclass field defaulting to None, instead of the derived value main exposes. Every provider that only supplies prompt_tokens / completion_tokens (and every caller that builds a response from partial usage) therefore reported a None total, which broke three suites:

  • tests/test_providers.py::TestProviderResponse::test_total_tokens_and_dict
  • tests/test_providers.py::TestOpenAIProvider::test_chat_returns_uniform_response
  • tests/test_chat_audit.py::TestProviderCallLogging::test_success_logs_provider_status_tokens

Fix: total_tokens is derived again (prompt + completion, and None only when the provider reports no usage at all) and the providers no longer pass it explicitly. Nothing changes for the feature this PR adds — the new usage property still serves the same figures through TokenUsage.from_counts, message rows, the conversation totals and the per-user summary endpoint.

Verification, running exactly what the CI jobs run, on this branch merged with current main:

  • ruff check . → clean
  • black --check . → clean
  • pytest -q → full suite passes

Same caveat as the other branches: the workflow run for this head is parked in action_required, so a maintainer needs to approve it before the checks execute ("Approve and run" on the CI workflow for this branch).

`total_tokens` became a plain dataclass field, so a response built from its
parts — providers whose vendor payload omits the total, and every caller that
constructs one by keyword — reported `None`:

* tests/test_providers.py::TestProviderResponse::test_total_tokens_and_dict
* tests/test_providers.py::TestOpenAIProvider::test_chat_returns_uniform_response
* tests/test_chat_audit.py::TestProviderCallLogging::test_success_logs_provider_status_tokens

`__post_init__` derives it from `prompt_tokens + completion_tokens` when the
provider reports only the parts (the same rule `TokenUsage.from_counts` already
applies to `response.usage`); an explicit total, or a response with no counts at
all, is left untouched.

@AyinkxLab I've repaired the CI failures on this branch.

Root causes, matching the failing jobs:

  • Tests / Tests (PostgreSQL) — ProviderResponse.total_tokens had stopped being derived, so providers and callers that build a response from only prompt_tokens / completion_tokens reported None:
    • tests/test_providers.py::TestProviderResponse::test_total_tokens_and_dict (assert None == 15)
    • tests/test_providers.py::TestOpenAIProvider::test_chat_returns_uniform_response (assert None == 18)
    • tests/test_chat_audit.py::TestProviderCallLogging::test_success_logs_provider_status_tokens (token_count logged as None)
  • Rounding that out, the branch could not import at all in places: ImportError: cannot import name 'TokenUsage' from 'app.models' broke every tests/test_token_usage.py case plus tests/test_routes.py, and @dataclass(frozen=True) on ProviderResponse raised FrozenInstanceError: cannot assign to field 'prompt_tokens' in the mock-provider paths. Both are fixed: TokenUsage resolves, and the frozen response derives its total at construction when the vendor payload omits it.
  • Lint & format — F821 Undefined name 'TCT' (a typo for UTC) and unused imports (datetime.UTC, usage_from_text, sum_usage) plus an unsorted import block.

The per-conversation tracking this PR adds is unchanged: the same figures flow through ProviderResponse.usage / TokenUsage.from_counts, the message columns, conversation totals, export and the per-user summary endpoint.

Verification, running exactly what the CI jobs run, on this branch merged with current main: ruff check . clean, black --check . clean, full pytest -q suite passes.

One thing I cannot do from the fork: the workflow run for this head is parked in action_required, so GitHub needs a maintainer to approve it before the checks execute — could you hit "Approve and run" for this branch? Nothing else is outstanding.
