What

Desk signs. Press L at any desk (empty or not) to hang a big sign from the ceiling over it: Operations, Code cleanup, whatever the desk is for. Up to 32 characters, seven colors, a few ideas to pick from. It hangs over the far edge of the desk, facing the chair, so it reads over the worker's shoulder. While the desk back-to-back with it has no sign of its own, the sign shows the same text on its back, so it reads from both sides of a pod. The desk hint shows the sign's name, and L again changes it or takes it down. Everyone on the floor sees it.

Room to grow. The north wall between the gong and the east corner now has a yellow 🚧 Room to grow sign. Press E there and 🔨 Knock through: that stretch of wall comes down and a back office opens behind it, with a back-to-back pair of desks (Desk 17 and 18), a rug, a lamp and a window, in a puff of confetti. Knock through again for another row (Desk 19 and 20). The sign moves to the back wall, where E can also wall the last row back up, but only once nobody's working there. New workers and the task queue fill its desks before any bean bag comes out.

Each floor keeps its own signs and back office in .agent-office/floorplan.json.

Design notes

  • It's a bay, not the whole wall moving. The north wall holds the boards, the kiosks, the elevator and the gong, and every floor's elevator has to line up. Moving that whole wall would have meant making the room size (FLOOR) dynamic in 26 files, on the server too, where every floor is live at once. The one free stretch of the north wall is past the gong, so the bay opens there, and nothing that's already in the office moves. The two plants in the doorway are put away while the bay is built.
  • Two rows at most (4 more desks). In the rooftop city there's a street about 10 m behind the building. A third row would stand in it.
  • Everything that finds its way round a floor takes the build-out level: the nav grid (the dog, walk-home routes, walk-to), seat picking (nextFreeSeat, beanbagsOut), the server's hire check (Desk 19 isn't built yet), the third-person camera clamp, the sky shader's indoor light and rain shelter, indoor sound, and whereabouts (🏗️ in the back office).
  • The building's outside shows every floor's bay (FloorInfo.wing), with posts down to the street under the lowest floor that has each row. Two lawn/plaza trees that stood where the bay goes were moved.
  • If you're standing in a row that gets walled up, or you switch to a floor that isn't built out as far, you're moved back into the room.

Checks

  • npm run typecheck, npm run build, npm test: 293 pass. New tests/floorplan.test.ts covers the store: labels, colors, cleaning text, expanding and shrinking, a tampered file, and seat order. The nav tests now run walk-home routes from every seat at every build-out level. interaction.test.ts covers the L key.
  • Headless Chrome smokes against a real server:
    • L at a desk opens the sign window without typing an "l" into it. Enter hangs the sign, the hint names it, and it shows two-sided.
    • E at the wall sign opens the expand window; knocking through builds the row.
    • Hiring at an unbuilt desk is refused. A shell worker sits at Desk 17. Walling up while it's there is refused. After sending it home it walks out of the bay, and walling up then moves you back into the room.
    • Daytime, night and rain inside the bay look right.
    • A 3-floor building (bays of 1, 2 and 0 rows) looks right from the street and the roof, and switching floors from inside a bay moves you into the room.

L at any desk hangs a big sign from the ceiling over it ("Operations",
"Code cleanup"), in one of seven colors; it faces the chair and says the
same on its back while the desk across the pair has none of its own.

The north wall between the gong and the east corner can come down: E at
its "Room to grow" sign knocks through into a back office with a pair of
desks, and again for a second row (any deeper and it would stand in the
street behind the building). The same sign walls the last row back up
once nobody's working there. New workers and the task queue take its
desks before any bean bag comes out.

Each floor keeps its signs and how far it's built out in
.agent-office/floorplan.json. The nav grid, the dog, walks home, the
camera, the sky's indoor light and rain, sound and the building's outside
(each floor's bay, on posts down to the street) all know how far a floor
goes.
