From ee30e148793eed8d94b5d5bf64b8f61af55de86e Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Tejas Shah Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2026 02:21:49 +0700 Subject: [PATCH 1/8] feat(bin): check a worker's commit message against its change with Jev, opt-in With TYPESAFE_API_KEY present, bin/fm-spawn.sh points each ship and scout worker's git at a per-task hooks directory through one exported setting, so nothing is written into the project. The commit-msg hook stops an added line matching a fixed credential pattern, warns about a filler subject from a word list, and - only for a project listed in config/jev-code-projects - asks Jev in one request whether the message is filler, contradicts the change, the change carries debug leftovers, or a staged file is unaccounted for. Every Jev outcome lets the commit through; the project's own hooks keep running. Adds fm_jev_code_allowed to bin/fm-jev-lib.sh as the shared per-project gate for sending code. --- AGENTS.md | 1 + bin/fm-commit-check.sh | 253 +++++++++++++++++++++++ bin/fm-jev-lib.sh | 17 +- bin/fm-spawn.sh | 14 +- bin/fm-test-run.sh | 12 +- docs/configuration.md | 35 +++- docs/documentation-audiences.json | 4 + docs/verification/commit-check.md | 54 +++++ tests/fm-commit-check.test.sh | 331 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 9 files changed, 711 insertions(+), 10 deletions(-) create mode 100755 bin/fm-commit-check.sh create mode 100644 docs/verification/commit-check.md create mode 100644 tests/fm-commit-check.test.sh diff --git a/AGENTS.md b/AGENTS.md index 66c2d3d1ef8..9717a29e29a 100644 --- a/AGENTS.md +++ b/AGENTS.md @@ -87,6 +87,7 @@ config/turnend-churn-absorb optional presence flag opting this home into the de config/cmux-socket-password optional cmux control-socket password; LOCAL, gitignored; read fresh on every cmux CLI call and passed through without ever overriding an operator's own ambient CMUX_SOCKET_PASSWORD when absent (docs/cmux-backend.md "Setup") config/wedge-alarm optional away-mode wedge-alarm active-alert directives; LOCAL, gitignored; absent means auto (macOS Notification Center when available); see docs/wedge-alarm.md config/watched-tools.json optional list of the tools this home depends on, read by the update check armed with bin/fm-tool-update-check.sh; LOCAL, gitignored, firstmate-maintained but human-editable, and NOT inherited by secondmate homes; see docs/configuration.md "Watched tool updates" +config/jev-code-projects optional list of project names, one per line, whose commit message, staged file names, and staged diff a worker's key-gated commit check may send to Jev; LOCAL, gitignored, absent = no project, and not inherited; see docs/configuration.md "Commit check" config/x-mode.env generated Relay watcher cadence; LOCAL, gitignored; source before arming watcher when present data/ personal fleet records; LOCAL, gitignored as a whole backlog.md task queue, dependencies, history diff --git a/bin/fm-commit-check.sh b/bin/fm-commit-check.sh new file mode 100755 index 00000000000..58110e0f75d --- /dev/null +++ b/bin/fm-commit-check.sh @@ -0,0 +1,253 @@ +#!/usr/bin/env bash +# fm-commit-check.sh - a worker's commit-time check: credentials by pattern, and +# "does the message match the change?" asked of typesafe.ai's System One model +# (Jev). a `no`, a low-confidence answer, a timeout, a transport or API error, and a malformed answer print nothing, and in every one of those cases the commit goes through. + +The setting reaches the worker on the same channel as the task marker, on every runtime backend, and applies wherever a harness runs the worker's git commands with the terminal's environment, which is the same inheritance the task marker already relies on for every supported harness. +A harness or sandbox that withholds that one variable from its shell leaves commits exactly as they are without the feature, and one that blocks network access leaves the credential stop and the filler word list working while the request fails and the commit goes through. +The pipeline's own fix commits are made outside the worker's terminal and are not checked. + +`bin/fm-commit-check.sh`'s header owns the exact gates, patterns, and bounds, `bin/fm-jev-lib.sh` owns the request, the answer validation, the key handling, and the project list, and [`verification/commit-check.md`](verification/commit-check.md) records the live evidence. + ## Gate defaults (.no-mistakes.yaml) The tracked `.no-mistakes.yaml` sets `test.evidence.store_in_repo: true` and pins `commands.lint` to `bin/fm-lint.sh`, the same owner CI invokes. @@ -496,7 +525,7 @@ OPENAI_API_KEY SSH_AUTH_SOCK ``` -Firstmate retains basic home, executable search, terminal, locale, temporary-directory, and backend routing variables, plus its explicit launch assignments, its ship and scout task marker, and enabled task trace. +Firstmate retains basic home, executable search, terminal, locale, temporary-directory, and backend routing variables, plus its explicit launch assignments, its ship and scout task marker, the [commit check](#commit-check-env-typesafe_api_key-configjev-code-projects)'s git setting, and enabled task trace. The hooks therefore exist only for that worker's own git commands: nothing is written into the project, its git directory, or its git configuration, no other copy of the repository sees them, and cleanup removes the directory with the task's other temporary files. -The directory forwards every other hook to the project's own, so a project's existing hooks keep running, and the project's own commit-message hook runs first with its refusal standing. +The directory forwards every other hook to the repository's own, so a project's existing hooks keep running, and the repository's own commit-message hook runs first with its refusal standing. +The check acts only on a commit to the task's own worktree, recorded at launch by its top-level and common git directory: a commit the worker's commands make in any other repository - a test fixture, a temporary repository, a clone, another worktree - is not stopped, is told nothing, and has nothing sent about it. Second mates are never given the hooks. Code decides first, on the worker's machine: -- An added line matching a fixed credential pattern - a private key block, an AWS, GitHub, Slack, Google, or `sk-` style key, or a quoted literal assigned to a password, secret, token, or API-key name - stops the commit and names the file, the line, and the kind, never the value. - This is the only thing that stops a commit, Jev has no part in it, and `git commit --no-verify` is the way past a fixture. -- A subject that is only a filler word such as `wip`, `fix`, or `update` is warned about without asking. +- An added line matching a recognised credential format - a private key block, or an AWS, GitHub, Slack, Google, or `sk-` style key - stops the commit, names the file, the line, and the kind, never the value, and tells the worker to remove the credential from the change. + This is the only thing that stops a commit, and Jev has no part in it. +- An added line that assigns a quoted literal to a password, secret, token, or API-key name is often ordinary code, so it only prints one advisory line naming the file and the line, and the commit goes through. - Merges, rebases, cherry-picks, reverts, `fixup!`, `squash!`, and `amend!` commits, and commits with nothing staged are not checked at all. The key alone sends nothing about a project. Only for a project whose name is a line of the local, gitignored `config/jev-code-projects` (one project name per line, the name of its directory under `projects/`; blank lines and `#` lines are ignored; absent means no project; not inherited by second-mate homes) does the hook then make one request carrying up to four yes/no questions: is the message filler, does it contradict the change, does the change carry debug leftovers, and is a staged file unaccounted for by the message. -A question code can already answer is left out: filler when the word list settled it, leftovers when the change adds no line of code, and unaccounted files when only one file is staged. +A question code can already answer is left out: leftovers when the change adds no line of code, and unaccounted files when only one file is staged. +Filler is judged only by that request, so it is not judged at all for a project that is not listed. That request carries the commit message (its last 4000 characters when longer), the staged file names (the first 200), and the staged diff with prose, lockfiles, generated, vendored, and secret-shaped paths left out (its last 24000 characters when longer). A `yes` whose confidence and `yes` probability are both at or above the shared 0.6 floor prints one advisory line; a `no`, a low-confidence answer, a timeout, a transport or API error, and a malformed answer print nothing, and in every one of those cases the commit goes through. The setting reaches the worker on the same channel as the task marker, on every runtime backend, and applies wherever a harness runs the worker's git commands with the terminal's environment, which is the same inheritance the task marker already relies on for every supported harness. -A harness or sandbox that withholds that one variable from its shell leaves commits exactly as they are without the feature, and one that blocks network access leaves the credential stop and the filler word list working while the request fails and the commit goes through. +A harness or sandbox that withholds that one variable from its shell leaves commits exactly as they are without the feature, and one that blocks network access leaves the credential stop and the secret-literal advisory working while the request fails and the commit goes through. The hooks therefore exist only for that worker's own git commands: nothing is written into the project, its git directory, or its git configuration, no other copy of the repository sees them, and cleanup removes the directory with the task's other temporary files. The directory forwards every other hook to the repository's own, so a project's existing hooks keep running, and the repository's own commit-message hook runs first with its refusal standing. The check acts only on a commit to the task's own worktree, recorded at launch by its top-level and common git directory: a commit the worker's commands make in any other repository - a test fixture, a temporary repository, a clone, another worktree - is not stopped, is told nothing, and has nothing sent about it. Second mates are never given the hooks. +That setting overrides `core.hooksPath` for every git command the worker runs, so a tool that installs git hooks sees the task's temporary hooks directory in place of the repository's own. +`pre-commit install` refuses to install while `core.hooksPath` is set. +`lefthook install` and `git lfs install` write their hook into the temporary directory, where it replaces the forwarder of that name or, for `commit-msg`, the check itself: the hook then runs only for that worker and is removed with the task, and the repository's own hooks directory is not updated. +A listed project whose setup step installs hooks should have them installed in the repository before a worker is launched on it, or stay off the list. + Code decides first, on the worker's machine: - An added line matching a recognised credential format - a private key block, or an AWS, GitHub, Slack, Google, or `sk-` style key - stops the commit, names the file, the line, and the kind, never the value, and tells the worker to remove the credential from the change. @@ -344,11 +350,11 @@ Code decides first, on the worker's machine: - An added line that assigns a quoted literal to a password, secret, token, or API-key name is often ordinary code, so it only prints one advisory line naming the file and the line, and the commit goes through. - Merges, rebases, cherry-picks, reverts, `fixup!`, `squash!`, and `amend!` commits, and commits with nothing staged are not checked at all. -The key alone sends nothing about a project. -Only for a project whose name is a line of the local, gitignored `config/jev-code-projects` (one project name per line, the name of its directory under `projects/`; blank lines and `#` lines are ignored; absent means no project; not inherited by second-mate homes) does the hook then make one request carrying up to four yes/no questions: is the message filler, does it contradict the change, does the change carry debug leftovers, and is a staged file unaccounted for by the message. +The hook then makes one request carrying up to four yes/no questions: is the message filler, does it contradict the change, does the change carry debug leftovers, and is a staged file unaccounted for by the message. A question code can already answer is left out: leftovers when the change adds no line of code, and unaccounted files when only one file is staged. -Filler is judged only by that request, so it is not judged at all for a project that is not listed. That request carries the commit message (its last 4000 characters when longer), the staged file names (the first 200), and the staged diff with prose, lockfiles, generated, vendored, and secret-shaped paths left out (its last 24000 characters when longer). +A diff line that matches the password-or-secret-literal pattern above is never sent: it is replaced by `[line withheld]`. +A project taken off the list after a worker was launched is no longer checked by that worker's hook. A `yes` whose confidence and `yes` probability are both at or above the shared 0.6 floor prints one advisory line; a `no`, a low-confidence answer, a timeout, a transport or API error, and a malformed answer print nothing, and in every one of those cases the commit goes through. With the real library and a fake `curl` it asserts that `--install` writes nothing without a key, for a project that is not listed, or for a directory that is not a git work tree, then makes real commits through the installed hooks and asserts one request per commit, that the key reaches neither `curl`'s argv nor its environment, that a git without the exported setting is untouched, that a commit in an unrelated repository or in another worktree of the same repository is not stopped, is told nothing, has nothing sent, and still runs that repository's own hook, and that the project's own hooks still run and still decide. It then runs `bin/fm-spawn.sh` on a fake tmux and asserts the pane is sent the setting only when the home holds a key and lists the project, that every line sent for an unlisted project with a key equals the keyless launch, that the filtered launch environment retains the setting only for the listed project, that a commit made under the sent line in the task's worktree is checked, and that one made under it in another repository is not. The timeout, transport-error, and malformed-answer paths were exercised only there and in the library's own callers' suites, not against the live endpoint. diff --git a/tests/fm-commit-check.test.sh b/tests/fm-commit-check.test.sh index c22767201ba..9cd274ef070 100644 --- a/tests/fm-commit-check.test.sh +++ b/tests/fm-commit-check.test.sh @@ -205,6 +205,19 @@ stage 'src/we"ird.py' "TOKEN = \"$ghtoken\"\\n" check "$HOME_ON" listed 'Add the client' expect_code 1 $?
