Allow users to automatically flesh out bibliographic data by integrating with external web services. #44

This is a question about how to make it easy for users to add detailed information to the database without having to manually enter it.

Current services which we could use are:

  • Open Library
Provides RDF representations of books - using FRBR, Dublin Core, FOAF and BIBO vocabularies to describe relationships.

  • CrossRef
Provides content negotiation for data describing DOI's - using Turtle or RDF gives back data in the form of triples - unsure if vocabulary changes based on original data source or if its standardised.
Alternatively we could use there Restful api - https://github.com/CrossRef/rest-api-doc

  • WorldCat
Provides content negotiation for book bibliographic information - using Schema and their own custom Library extension to present bibliographic data.

  • Open Citations
This uses the Spar Ontologies to represent citational data related to DOI's.

  • BaseData
This is an old project for linking together different identifiers. Potentially we could use this to offer a simple way to link these different services. Eg. ISBN points to DOI and OpenLibraryId.

  • Others - eg. Trove?

Given that all these services have different vocabularies we will need to develop our own translators for each of these services and decide on a particular vocabulary for storing reference data in the hyperreadings db.
