What is the reason for symbolicator/24.2.0 requests?

In our access logs I stumbled upon requests made with user agent symbolicator/24.2.0 that AFAIK belongs to https://github.com/getsentry/symbolicator:

{'Date': '2024-06-07 23:10:12',  ..., 'URL': '/assets/dist/736.e6e3e560.js', 'User Agent': 'symbolicator/24.2.0'}

The thing I don't understand, for that JS file to be part of the current stack trace, it HAD to be loaded anyway in the browser.

Why does the symbolicator need an additional request to reference any JS code in that file?

I also suggest to enhance the documentation about why the symbolicator might additional requests in the JS context...

What are you doing, exactly? The JS SDK does not access symbolicator like this, afaik. Can you share more details about your setup, with concrete SDK usage?

symbolicator is doing requests to fetch the source files when it is not able to resolve source maps via your uploaded artifacts. You can configure in the Sentry interface whether symbolicator should do these requests by toggling the "Allow JavaScript Source Fetching" option in the security and privacy settings.

@lforst Massive kudos Luca, thank you very much. This explains why we just had this issue after disabling the upload of created source maps recently.
