Table multiple selection range edge case

I may be missing something, but there is strange behavior that I noticed for table multiple selects. We currently use a table with selectionMode="multiple", selectionBehavior="toggle" and getRowHref="..." to open a side drawer on clicking a row. The same behavior is reflected by the demo here. Namely, I cannot smoothly multi-select a range of entries.

Observed behavior
To multi-select a range, I must do the following:

1. Select a row via the checkbox in the selection column
2. Shift+click another row anywhere but the checkbox

Expected behavior
After step 1, I should be able to shift click into the checkbox also to select the range.

I'm not sure whether this counts as a bug, so wanted to Q&A first.
