From d23c1efa10d0bd3fc1e44ae783b2f16097ca8b20 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Adam Date: Sat, 31 Oct 2026 17:01:50 +0000 Subject: [PATCH] Add five DebateOwl comparison pages: Claude, PublicForumAI, Gemini, HyperWrite, SchoolAI Each page has its own shape: one prep night done twice (Claude), a format coverage grid (PublicForumAI), five assumptions checked (Gemini), a one-shot writer against a practice loop with prices (HyperWrite), and a teacher's checklist with a pick per need (SchoolAI). Competitor facts come from each product's own site, checked on 31 October 2026, and every page lists its sources. The pages are in llms.txt, the /best-ai-debate-tools related links and the templating check, and link to each other in a ring so each has three inbound links. The guide-content guard now also allows the byline and disclosure lines dated 31 October, as it already did for 29 October. PracticeDebate is left out: practicedebate.ai answers every request with a Vercel security checkpoint, so its product and prices could not be checked on its own site. Should I prepare my debate with Claude or with DebateOwl?

Use DebateOwl when the motion and the date are fixed: it keeps the motion, your side and the speech times in one place, writes the case in the order you will say it with "If they say… we answer…" replies, and times a practice round that ends in a judge's verdict. Claude is a strong general assistant with a free plan, Projects that remember instructions, cited web search and voice mode. It is enough when you want ideas, a critique of a case you already wrote, or a spoken chat without a clock.

+ +
+

Tonight's motion

+

"Schools should replace graded homework with supervised study time."

+

You are Pro, speaking first, in a Public Forum round on Friday. Below, the same evening runs twice, step by step: once in a Claude chat, once in DebateOwl. Neither column is a test result. Both describe what each product's own pages and screens offer as of October 2026.

+

One rule for both columns: open every source and find the sentence before it goes in your speech. A citation proves a page exists, not that it says what your case needs.

+
+
+

The evening, six steps, two tools

+
  1. 1Set up the motion

    In a Claude chat

Make a Project for the motion and put the motion, your side and the format in its instructions. Claude follows those instructions in every chat inside the Project, and the free plan allows five Projects. C2

    In DebateOwl

Open a Current Debate with the motion, your side and your speaker role. Every case, source, drill and round you make tonight is filed under it, and none of it leaks into your other motions.

  2. 2Write the case

    In a Claude chat

Ask for a Pro case. Claude will write one, but its shape is whatever you ask for, so spell it out: an opening, the arguments, the evidence, answers to the other side, a closing.

    In DebateOwl

The case generator writes it in speaking order: an opening line, two to four arguments that each carry an explanation, evidence naming its source and year, and why it matters, then replies and a closing. A weak argument can be rewritten on its own.

  3. 3Back it with evidence

    In a Claude chat

Turn on web search and ask for studies on homework and grades. Each answer that uses search comes with citations. C3

    In DebateOwl

Factoids looks up a claim and suggests evidence with a named source.

  4. 4Get ready for their replies

    In a Claude chat

Ask what the Con side will say, or tell Claude to argue Con for the whole chat and not give in until your answer beats its point.

    In DebateOwl

The case already ends with "If they say… we answer…" lines. Attack reads the Con case for its weakest link, and Crossfire either questions you one question at a time or lets you question it.

  5. 5Say it against the clock

    In a Claude chat

Voice mode gives you a full spoken conversation on every plan. Its pages say nothing about a speech timer, so put your phone timer next to it and keep the Public Forum times yourself. C4

    In DebateOwl

Sparring runs a Public Forum round at its real times: four-minute constructives and rebuttals, three-minute summaries, a two-minute final focus. Speak or type; in a voice round the opponent answers aloud. It ends with a judge's verdict, a score per category and what to work on next. Delivery is judged from your words, not your voice.

  6. 6The next morning

    In a Claude chat

The chats sit inside the Project. To take the case into the round, copy it out into a document.

    In DebateOwl

The case and the round transcript are under the motion. Export the case to Google Docs or PDF and print it.

+
+
+

When plain Claude is enough

+
    +
  • You are exploring a motion you have never argued. A free chat that lists both sides is all you need on day one.
  • +
  • You already wrote the case. Paste it in or upload the file and ask Claude where a judge would stop believing you. That critique is one of its strengths.
  • +
  • You want to talk an argument through out loud with no format and no clock. Voice mode does that on the free plan.
  • +
  • Your round is a class discussion, not a timed debate with set speeches.
  • +
+

Claude's free plan costs nothing; Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. C1 For how it compares with ChatGPT, see ChatGPT vs Claude for debate prep.

+
+
+

When the round has a date

+

That is the night DebateOwl was built for: the motion stays put, the case comes in the shape you will speak it, and the practice round keeps time for you. DebateOwl's home page shows how it works, and which AI is best for debate lines up more tools.

+

Prepare tonight's motion in DebateOwl

+

The DebateOwl app has no free plan (3-day free trial, then $5/month); the separate timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator are free with no account.

+

Other side-by-sides: DebateOwl vs Gemini checks five common assumptions, and DebateOwl vs HyperWrite sets a one-shot writer against a practice loop.

+
+

Claude questions, answered

Is Claude free?

Yes. As of October 2026 Claude has a $0 plan with usage limits that reset every five hours and every week. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually.

Can Claude time my speeches?

The Claude pages we read describe no speech timer. Voice mode holds a spoken conversation; keeping each speech to its minutes is up to you.

Does Claude work in Hungarian?

Claude's interface comes in eleven languages, Spanish among them and Hungarian not, and its help page says you can still chat in any language. The DebateOwl app is in English, Spanish and Hungarian.

Can I use Gemini instead of DebateOwl for debate?

For ideas and background, Gemini does the job: it has a free tier, answers in more than 70 languages including Hungarian, and Gems remember your instructions. DebateOwl is the pick for a set motion and a round date, because it writes every case in one fixed shape with "If they say… we answer…" replies and runs a timed practice round at your format's speech times. Below are five common assumptions about Gemini and debate, each answered in two sentences.

+ +
+

Five assumptions, checked

+

Each verdict comes from Google's own Gemini pages and from DebateOwl's app, as of October 2026. Two of the five come out in Gemini's favour.

+

Assumption 1

"Any chatbot can write a debate case."

Half true

Gemini will write arguments for any motion, but the layout is whatever your prompt asks for, so two evenings can give you two different shapes. DebateOwl writes every case the same way: an opening, two to four arguments each with an explanation, evidence and why it matters, "If they say… we answer…" replies, and a closing.

Assumption 2

"It works in Hungarian."

True

Hungarian is on Google's list of more than 70 languages for the Gemini web app, and so is Spanish. The DebateOwl app is in Hungarian as well, from the menus to the case, the replies and the practice opponent. G1

Assumption 3

"You have to explain your motion again in every chat."

Not with Gems

A Gem saves detailed instructions for a task you repeat, so it can hold your motion, side and speech times. Google's own Live page says Gemini Live cannot use Gems, while every DebateOwl tool, spoken Sparring included, reads the motion from your Current Debate. G2 G3

Assumption 4

"A chatbot can run my practice round."

Partly

Gemini Live lets you argue out loud and switch between talking and typing, but the Google pages we read describe no debate format or speech clock. DebateOwl's Sparring gives each speech its real time in School 4-6-6-3, Lincoln-Douglas or Public Forum, and ends with a judge's verdict. G3

Assumption 5

"Students get Gemini Pro for free."

Only some

The free year of Google AI Pro is for eligible U.S. college students aged 18 and over, needs a payment method at sign-up, and charges $19.99 a month afterwards unless you cancel. A high school debater does not qualify, so the choice is the free tier or paying for a plan. G4

+
+
+

Where Gemini earns its place

+

Background reading on a topic you have never argued: Deep Research browses hundreds of sites and hands you a report. A Gem that holds your club's house style. Talking through an idea on a walk with Gemini Live. All of that works on the free tier, and AI Pro adds higher limits and bigger uploads. G5 G6

+

What it does not hand you is the round itself: a case in speaking order, replies to the other side, and a clock that stops you at four minutes.

+
+
+

When a motion lands on your desk

+

Put it in DebateOwl, get the case with its replies, and practise it at the real speech times. DebateOwl's main page walks through the app; our guide to the best AI for debate covers the wider field.

+

Write a case for your motion

+

The DebateOwl app has no free plan (3-day free trial, then $5/month); the separate timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator are free with no account.

+

For a writing tool instead of a chatbot, read DebateOwl vs HyperWrite. Teachers choosing for a class can use the SchoolAI checklist.

+
+

Two more Gemini questions

How much does Gemini cost?

As of October 2026 Google lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro at $19.99 and Google AI Ultra from $99.99, on top of a free tier.

Is Gemini's research good enough for debate evidence?

Deep Research browses hundreds of websites and writes a report, which is a quick start on a new topic. Treat each source in it as a lead, the same as with DebateOwl's Factoids: open it and find the sentence.

+

+

Should I use HyperWrite or DebateOwl to prepare a debate?

DebateOwl, if you have to stand up and say the case: it writes it with "If they say… we answer…" replies, then drills you with questions and times a practice round that ends in a verdict. HyperWrite is a general AI writing assistant whose Debate Assistant turns a proposition into arguments for and against, backed by statistics it searches for. That is enough for an essay, a class discussion or a first look at both sides. It stops at the page, so editing and practising happen elsewhere.

+ +
+

Two kinds of tool

+

A one-shot writer takes your topic and returns a finished page. A practice loop writes the case, then keeps coming back at it: questions, a timed round, a verdict, a fix. HyperWrite is the first kind, and a good one for writing. DebateOwl is the second.

+
+
+

What you walk away with

+
+

After one go in HyperWrite

  • A page of arguments for and against your proposition, with statistics, studies and expert opinions from its Search. H2
  • From its Statement Deconstructor: one statement split into its parts and hidden assumptions, a counter-argument to each, and open questions. H3
  • Text to review and edit into your own words; its own steps tell you to make any edits it needs.
  • A writing assistant for everything else too, from essays to email, with a Chrome extension. H1
+

After an evening in DebateOwl

  • A case for your side in speaking order, with "If they say… we answer…" lines for what the other side will say.
  • All of it filed under the motion, so tomorrow starts where tonight stopped.
  • A set of questions you have already answered once, from Crossfire.
  • A timed round you can reread, with a judge's verdict, a score per category and what to work on next.
  • The case exported to Google Docs or PDF, ready to print.
+
+

The difference in one line: HyperWrite gives you both sides at once to read; DebateOwl gives you your side and the answers, then makes you say them.

When HyperWrite is enough

+

When the job ends on paper: a persuasive essay, a position paper, a balanced overview before a class discussion, or a quick list of the other side's best points. If you also write a lot that is not debate, one writing assistant may be worth more to you than a debate app.

HyperWrite, briefly

Is HyperWrite free?

A free account gets limited monthly credits on its basic AI, and each debate tool offers a limited trial; neither size is stated. Premium is $19.99 a month, as of October 2026.

Can HyperWrite practise a round with me?

Should I use DebateOwl or PublicForumAI?

If you debate more than Public Forum, or switch formats between tournaments, DebateOwl is the one that follows you: timed practice rounds in Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas, prep tools and a free timer for Policy, British Parliamentary and World Schools, and prep tools for Congress. If Public Forum is the only format you will ever debate, PublicForumAI is built for exactly that, with full practice rounds judged by a tech or lay judge, and its free plan gives you 3 rounds a month.

If Public Forum is all you debate

+

PublicForumAI was started in 2024 by high school debaters in New York City, and every tool follows the Public Forum speech order. A full round takes about 35 minutes with prep time, you choose a tech or lay judge, and premium rounds argue from real evidence with a link for each card. It asks for a computer or a large screen. Its free plan is generous enough that a PF debater can try a full round before paying anything. P1 P2

+

DebateOwl's case is the same shape in every format: an opening, two to four arguments with evidence and why each matters, then "If they say… we answer…" replies and a closing. That is what lets one account cover a PF season and a British Parliamentary weekend.

Three short questions

Is PublicForumAI free?
Yes. As of October 2026 its free plan includes 3 full practice rounds and 5 AI cases a month. Premium is $9.99 a month, or $79 a year, for unlimited rounds and linked evidence.
Does either one practise crossfire?
PublicForumAI's site says a crossfire fast enough for a real round is in the works. DebateOwl drills it separately in Crossfire, and its Sparring round runs the speeches without crossfire periods.
I only debate Public Forum. Which should I pick?
On price, PublicForumAI: its free plan already runs full rounds with a ballot. DebateOwl is the pick when you want crossfire drills, replies written into every case, and room to move to Lincoln-Douglas or World Schools later.

Sign up free with Google, Microsoft, Clever, ClassLink or email, build a Space and launch it. Students enter its code at schoolai.com/join or scan a QR code, and can join only while it is running. S8 S3 S4

Pick: DebateOwl's free tools, when the lesson is a live debate in the room.

Student accounts

DebateOwl

The free tools need none. For the app, each student signs up for their own account; there is no class roster and no way to add a class at once. It is for students aged 13 and older.

SchoolAI

Students join a running Space by code or link, and rostering through your school's systems comes with paid plans. S3 S6

Pick: SchoolAI, if every student in a class needs to be in one place without separate sign-ups.

Seeing what each student does

DebateOwl

No teacher view. Each student's cases and rounds stay in that student's account, and the free timer keeps the round in the browser, not on a server.

SchoolAI

Teachers see every conversation in real time, and Mission Control shows who is engaged and who is struggling. Reviewing student chats, down to a single chat, is on the free plan. S1 S2 S5

Pick: SchoolAI. This is the job it was built for.

Cost per student

DebateOwl

The free tools cost nothing for the whole class. The app is $5 a month per student after a 3-day trial, so a club of six is $30 a month plus tax. DebateOwl lists no school plan.

SchoolAI

Free for teachers, capped at 5 Space sessions a year. Pro and Scale are sold only to schools and districts, and the pricing page shows no dollar figures, so the cost per student is whatever your school agrees. S5 S6

Pick: SchoolAI's free plan for a few AI lessons a year; DebateOwl for a handful of competitors practising every week.

Debate formats

DebateOwl

The free timer has presets for Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, British Parliamentary, World Schools, Asian Parliamentary and the School 4-6-6-3 format, and lets you build your own. The app runs timed practice rounds in three of them: School 4-6-6-3, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum.

SchoolAI

Its product pages name no competitive debate format. A help article gives debates as one use of its time-based activity tool. S9

Pick: DebateOwl.

+

Student data, in one paragraph each

+

SchoolAI lists SOC 2 Type 2, FERPA, COPPA and GDPR compliance on its trust page, and says it does not use student data to train AI models. A standard data processing agreement is available on every plan; custom changes to it come with paid plans. S7 S5

+

DebateOwl's free tools ask for no sign-up, so there are no student accounts to manage. The app is for users 13 and older and keeps each student's work behind that student's own sign-in.

A plain plan for a debate class

+
    +
  1. This week: run a live debate with DebateOwl's free tools. No accounts.
  2. +
  3. If you want every student talking to an AI under your eye: try SchoolAI's free plan, and save its 5 sessions for the lessons that need them.
  4. +
  5. When the club has a competition: have the competitors start DebateOwl's 3-day trial and prepare the real motion.
  6. +
+

Open the free timer for tomorrow

+

The DebateOwl app has no free plan (3-day free trial, then $5/month); the separate timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator are free with no account.

+

The DebateOwl home page explains the app for students. For more tools by scenario, see which AI is best for debate, DebateOwl vs PublicForumAI for a Public Forum squad, and one prep night in Claude and DebateOwl.

Coaches also ask

Does SchoolAI have debate templates?

Its product pages we read describe none. Teachers build their own Spaces, so a debate activity is one you write, and a help article lists debates as an example for its time-based activity tool.

Can I see my students' DebateOwl work?

Not from a dashboard; DebateOwl has none. A student can export a case to Google Docs or PDF and share it with you.

Is DebateOwl free for a school?

The timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator are free, for any number of students, with no accounts. The app itself is paid per student after the trial.

You are Pro, speaking first, in a Public Forum round on Friday. Below, the same evening runs twice, step by step: once in a Claude chat, once in DebateOwl. Neither column is a test result. Both describe what each product's own pages and screens offer as of October 2026.

One rule for both columns: open every source and find the sentence before it goes in your speech. A citation proves a page exists, not that it says what your case needs.

When the round has a date

    +

That is the night DebateOwl was built for: the motion stays put, the case comes in the shape you will speak it, and the practice round keeps time for you. DebateOwl's home page shows how it works, and which AI is best for debate lines up more tools.

What it does not hand you is the round itself: a case in speaking order, replies to the other side, and a clock that stops you at four minutes.
