I know the app is mainly based on other apps, but I think the file manager could be put to good use with its own PDF viewer—it would save me from having to install an app from a questionable source just for that

There are quiet a few pdf readers on Fdroid. MuPDF is the one I use. All apps on Fdroid are open source.

There's a reason behind previews being absent from App Manager. Since App Manager has the internet permission declared and SSL pinning only works in Android 7 onwards, for users of Android 5-6, previewing a malicious file can cause problems. This is particularly severe for images and PDF files as we intend to generate previews using the Android-provided APIs rather than using a custom API to reduce the size of the app. A possible solution to this problem, of course, is the use of an isolated process (which doesn't inherit any permissions from App Manager process), which I am currently investigating.
