🛡️ Defense Strategies

Kinetic Impactor

How it works: High-speed collision to change asteroid trajectory

  • Best for: Small to medium asteroids (10-100m)
  • Time required: Months to years
  • Success rate: High for smaller asteroids
  • Cost: Medium
  • Risk: Low

When to use: When you have time to prepare and the asteroid is not too large

Gravity Tractor

How it works: Use gravitational force to gradually deflect asteroid

  • Best for: Large asteroids (100m+)
  • Time required: Years
  • Success rate: High for larger asteroids
  • Cost: High
  • Risk: Low

When to use: For massive asteroids when you have years to prepare

Laser Ablation

How it works: Focused laser to vaporize surface material

  • Best for: Small asteroids (<50m)
  • Time required: Months to years
  • Success rate: High for small asteroids
  • Cost: Very high
  • Risk: Medium

When to use: For small, fast-approaching asteroids

  • D: Crater diameter
  • E: Impact energy
  • θ: Impact angle
  • k, n: Material constants

Environmental Effects

  • Blast Radius: Total destruction zone
  • Thermal Radius: Heat effects zone
  • Seismic Radius: Earthquake effects zone
  • Tsunami Risk: Ocean impact consequences
