[Bug]: Private DNS does not turn off

Private DNS state goes from "Custom" to "ON" after turning it off via the app.

Expected behavior

Private DNS state should be "OFF", not "ON".

Hi there,

Just to confirm: by default, Android's Private DNS has three states: Off, Automatic, and Custom. If I understand your bug report correctly, when DNS toggle is toggled "off", it is indeed switching to Automatic instead of Off.

If this is indeed the behavior you are experiencing, it is a choice: there are very few reasons for anyone to fully turn it fully Off; the battery/performance impact is almost non-existent and it is a good security baseline. If it is a necessary feature for you, I would recommend checking out other similar apps on F-Droid (search "DNS", there are a few that will come up), sorry :/

In the next update, I have planned to consistently call it Off (automatic) throughout the app to avoid confusion.

If, however, this isn't the issue, would you mind attaching screenshots so I can be sure to understand the issue?

That's the issue. Didn't realise it was meant to work this way.

I'd consider making a "Dangerous" setting that turns it off completely. That would make it nice for users that have a PiHole server (without DoH/DoT enabled via 3rd party services) have a automatic toggle that let's them use the Pihole (so Private DNS off) in their LAN/VPN and the Private DNS (Automatic or Custom, it'd be nice to choose which mode to activate) whenever they aren't in their LAN/VPN.

I hadn't considered that scenario. I'll have a look.

It should be available on IzzyOnDroid by tomorrow and on F-Droid in a few days.

So, I'm once again here to report that it seems like the switch is too fast when the VPN is turned on.

This causes the Private DNS to not be fully disabled (even if it's disabled on Android Settings).

This could probably be fixed by delaying the switch by a few seconds.

Could you please add an option to delay the state switch so that I could verify if this is true?

I had just implemented a safety to address this very issue in version 2.1.2, but somehow forgot to apply it to the VPN Override.
The issue should now be fixed in version 2.1.3.

These have been there for a while; but they should respect toggling the Show status toast notifications off in the app's settings (towards the bottom).

Regarding testing things, no worries, take your time =)
